NGOs Do Not Work to Help the Poor

Poor Bangladeshis
First of all what is an NGO? The abbreviation NGO stands for non-governmental organization. NGOs are basically legal organizations that functions independently from any level of government. There are many types of NGOs but in Bangladesh most NGOs’ goals has to deal with social alleviation such as alleviating the poor. Now, there are about 40,000 NGOs on the international level. But in a local scale, there are up to millions. Why is there so many NGOs? The answer is simple, it’s same reason we go to war; it’s all because of the money. NGOs handle millions to billions of dollars and generate more by using the poor people to create their products. NGOs do provide jobs; however, their aim of making money is covered up with the notion of helping the poor.

You may ask why I’m writing this article?
I recently got off the phone of an officer in Bangladesh who works for Transparency International, which is a German-based corruption watchdog. I spoke to him about developments and MuktiBangla’s plan. He advised me not to establish MuktiBangla as an NGO but as an individual corporation you could say. The reason being is NGOs in Bangladesh are known for being notorious in hurting the poor people mentally and financially. They do provide income to the poor but they make their lives more miserable than it already are. NGOs are looked down upon as a shady business shadowing the corrupt atmosphere of Bangladesh. NGOs take away the livelihood of the poor and make them slaves by giving microcredit loans and hurting them physically or taking away whatever property they have if they cannot payback. It passionately angers me that the people who run these NGOs would be that low and that heartless in doing these harmful things to the poor. The poor people of Bangladesh suffer enough, why would anyone want to hurt them more intensely for financial gain.

Money is the reason why governments wage wars in the world, and money is the reason why NGOs take advantage of the poor in a massive scale without government. The poor people are not educated and they have no experience in business. These poor people, who go into business without experiences, are bound to make mistakes and loose money so they fall in the financial trap of these corrupt NGOs who lend them money. I’m writing this article after talking to a Transparency International officer in Dhaka, Bangladesh who has nothing to gain whatsoever by telling me all this. He told me his view and what the reality is in Bangladesh.

What’s MuktiBangla’s plan?
Well obviously under the advice of a TI officer we can’t establish an NGO. But instead we can establish ourselves as a corporation. We will see what happens in the future but for now we are looking at our options.
