NGOs Do Not Work to Help the Poor

Poor Bangladeshis
First of all what is an NGO? The abbreviation NGO stands for non-governmental organization. NGOs are basically legal organizations that functions independently from any level of government. There are many types of NGOs but in Bangladesh most NGOs’ goals has to deal with social alleviation such as alleviating the poor. Now, there are about 40,000 NGOs on the international level. But in a local scale, there are up to millions. Why is there so many NGOs? The answer is simple, it’s same reason we go to war; it’s all because of the money. NGOs handle millions to billions of dollars and generate more by using the poor people to create their products. NGOs do provide jobs; however, their aim of making money is covered up with the notion of helping the poor.

You may ask why I’m writing this article?
I recently got off the phone of an officer in Bangladesh who works for Transparency International, which is a German-based corruption watchdog. I spoke to him about developments and MuktiBangla’s plan. He advised me not to establish MuktiBangla as an NGO but as an individual corporation you could say. The reason being is NGOs in Bangladesh are known for being notorious in hurting the poor people mentally and financially. They do provide income to the poor but they make their lives more miserable than it already are. NGOs are looked down upon as a shady business shadowing the corrupt atmosphere of Bangladesh. NGOs take away the livelihood of the poor and make them slaves by giving microcredit loans and hurting them physically or taking away whatever property they have if they cannot payback. It passionately angers me that the people who run these NGOs would be that low and that heartless in doing these harmful things to the poor. The poor people of Bangladesh suffer enough, why would anyone want to hurt them more intensely for financial gain.

Money is the reason why governments wage wars in the world, and money is the reason why NGOs take advantage of the poor in a massive scale without government. The poor people are not educated and they have no experience in business. These poor people, who go into business without experiences, are bound to make mistakes and loose money so they fall in the financial trap of these corrupt NGOs who lend them money. I’m writing this article after talking to a Transparency International officer in Dhaka, Bangladesh who has nothing to gain whatsoever by telling me all this. He told me his view and what the reality is in Bangladesh.

What’s MuktiBangla’s plan?
Well obviously under the advice of a TI officer we can’t establish an NGO. But instead we can establish ourselves as a corporation. We will see what happens in the future but for now we are looking at our options.

I am by no means an expert, but I have had the privilege of working within the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing space here in Australia by implementing software that aids in this battle. I’m well aware of the suspicion towards NGO’s in third-world countries by the western world. This suspicion arises due to the sad fact that some of them act as terrorist fronts, and thus regulations have been introduced which ensure that transactions to/from these entities are handled with a high degree of suspicion.

The representative that you spoke to would be correct to claim that a number of NGO’s have given the label “NGO” a negative connotation, but I think it’s overly generalising to then extrapolate upon this claim by claiming that NGO’s collectively are bad in Bangladesh This claim could be seen as being disrespectful to the tens of thousands of people who honestly strive to help the poor and make Bangladesh a better place to live, and do so via an NGO. In fact, many NGO’s also follow the very same principle that MuktiBangla does – i.e. teaching a man to catch a fish, rather than giving him one.

Despite the obvious corrupt NGO’s that do exist, I think you’ll need to bring in some empirical data or first-hand accounts and analysis before making a judgement call as to whether or not NGO’s collectively “do not help the poor”. I also think it might be worth noting that a lot of the people who start NGO’s simply cannot incorporate due to the funds, legal, reporting, and extra administrative requirements and overheads associated with being a corporation. They may feel as though these efforts and resources could be better focussed elsewhere.

I have an aunt that runs an NGO that focusses on Women’s development – providing micro-credit (for instance, to purchase cows and sell milk) as a primary aim, and in the process she also offers business advice (e.g. where to get a cow, how to take care of it, etc.) and literacy training for these women to get up and running and self-sufficient. She dedicates all her time to running this NGO, and the women she’s helped respect her dearly and treat her like a mother or a sister whenever she comes to visit – not because of money, but because she genuinely cares about their well-being, and because they genuinely respect her.

She is not a terrorist front, nor is she doing this work to “make them slaves by giving microcredit loans and hurting them physically or taking away whatever property they have if they cannot payback”. All the women she has helped are better off.

I think the tone of this article suggests that all or the majority of NGO’s are bad, which certainly isn’t true. Unfortunately the financial freedom to operate for NGO’s is also what makes it attractive to the wrong crowd – but we should probably err on the cautious side before we let a few souls taint the good faith and reputation of many.

Thanks for your response. However, it appears that since con artists are involved in NGOs, legitimate people will have a hard time getting things done. Poor people who have bad experiences will definitely spread bad word of mouth to others. That’s why we have to be overcautious with our group.

  8. Think of it like this; each time you make a statement, what you are really saying is, I think that [statement] is true. Because it was you who said it, it is implied (and generally understood) that this is your opinion. Hence such terms as, professional opinion, or medical opinion, etc. The opinions might be accurate, and they might reflect something that is empirically verifiable.but they are still opinions. They arent true because we hold them, they are true because they reflect a commonly-detectable external reality. That is as far as we, as human beings, are capable of examining the concepts of truth and reality. If we cannot accept these things as factual, then there is no reason to accept anything much less a religious faith as factual.

Where do our values come from? I guess from a combination of our innate nature (evolution again), our environment or culture (the zeitgeist) and our upbringing. What is certain, as Ive said many times, is that God is no answer as the originator of our values. Because you still need a set of values to choose God over Satan in the first place.
